Current Bible Translation Bestsellers

This list is based on actual sales in Christian retail stores in the United States through November 29, 2008 using CROSS:SCAN as the source for the data collection.

1 New International Version
2 New King James Version
3 King James Version
4 New Living Translation
5 English Standard Version
6 New Revised Standard Version
7 Reina Valera 1960 (Spanish)
8 Holman Christian Standard Bible
9 International Children’s Bible
10 The Message

A couple changes from the last list I had posted. Not sure who, but someone is still buying KJV Bibles at a steady pace!

NLT and ESV continue to stay in the top 5.

HCSB dropped to 8. Again as word gets out about the 2009 text revision I can’t see this number getting any better for them.

NASB is nowhere to be seen. I think this has been coming for a while, we will see if the trend continues.

The Message gets some face time.

I can probably give an educated guess for the KJV buyers. I know a lot of Pentecostals (particularly UPC-ers) still adhere to KJV, as well as a lot of more traditional Baptists. The Mormons adhere to it as well. Some people just like it because they grew up with it.

It saddens me that the TNIV isn’t doing any better, but I think we all know why that is, which is even more saddening.

Interesting. I was also told by several that it is rather popular with Catholics. So when you add all those together, one can see why it remains in the top 3.
